School pickup rides for kids in San Diego

By Raquel Franco, Founder of RideNest, San Diego working mom · Updated October 26, 2026

If you can't do school pickup or drop-off in San Diego, your main options are a parent carpool, free MTS transit for older kids, a sitter who drives, or a kids ride service you book ahead. RideNest is a San Diego ride service for kids ages 8 to 18, launching in 2026, with five safety layers on every ride.

Who this is for

You work, and the school day does not. Maybe you have two kids at two schools with two bell times. Maybe your child goes to the neighborhood school and there is no bus. You have asked the other parents and your mom, and the plan still falls apart some weeks.

I am a San Diego working mom too. Here is what the bus covers, what else is out there, and where RideNest fits.

Why the school bus may not cover you

San Diego Unified buses students who go to school outside their home boundary for a program, such as magnet, VEEP or special education. The district says that students attending their residence school, in most cases, do not qualify.

If your child goes to the neighborhood school, the bus is likely not part of your plan. Check with the district for your own child.

Your options

A parent carpool

Trading days with other parents is free and often works, as long as everyone's week goes to plan. Apps like GoKid help school parents team up on carpools. GoKid is free for parents when the school pays for it, and the drivers are other parents, not paid drivers.

MTS for older kids

If your teen is ready to ride the bus or trolley, transit is free for ages 6 through 18 with a Youth PRONTO card or app account. Youth riders must carry eligible ID and tap before every ride. The pilot runs through June 30, 2027. For a confident older kid on a direct route, it is a good choice.

A sitter who drives

A sitter who picks up and stays until you get home covers the ride and the hours after. You also do the hiring, the checking and the backup plan yourself.

A kids ride service

A kids ride service sends a screened driver on a schedule you set. HopSkipDrive lists San Diego where it operates, and Kango lists San Diego as a service area. RideNest is the San Diego service I started for kids 8 to 18. See our comparison of San Diego kids ride options.

Not on the list: Uber teen rides are not offered in San Diego, as of October 2026. More in can teens take Uber alone in San Diego.

How a RideNest school ride works

RideNest works in three steps. You book ahead, we match a vetted Nest Driver, and your child gets there with live tracking.

  1. You book the ride ahead. Schedule a one-off or recurring ride in the app, for drop-off, pickup or both. RideNest is prearranged, so there are no on-demand strangers.
  2. We match a vetted Nest Driver. Your ride goes to a Nest Driver cleared by an FBI and DOJ background check, with $1M insurance on every trip.
  3. Your child gets there. You watch the ride on live GPS, updated every 10 seconds, and the trip ends with a PIN-verified drop-off so you know your child arrived.

The same plan works for after-school activity rides in San Diego.

Safety layers

Safety at RideNest runs on five layers.
