Can My Teen Take an Uber Alone in San Diego?

By Raquel Franco, Founder of RideNest · Published October 26, 2026 · Facts checked October 26, 2026

No. As of October 2026, Uber teen rides are not offered in San Diego. Uber's teen page says that in California, teen accounts can book rides only in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In San Diego, a teen account can order Uber Eats but not a ride. Lyft's teen accounts have not been announced for San Diego.

Uber's teen page does list San Diego as a California city, but the note beside it says rides run only in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Here is what changed, and what San Diego families use instead.

What changed, and when

The help page still describes the statewide stop. It says California riders must be 18 or older or ride with an adult, and a driver can cancel if a rider looks younger than 18. For San Diego, both Uber pages agree: no teen rides.

What about rides for younger kids?

In August 2026, Bloomberg reported that code in Uber's iOS app refers to a "tween" option for kids aged 10 to 12. The code would let the account holder require a grown-up at pickup or drop-off. Uber says this is not a live product. An Uber spokesperson said the only teen product it offers is for ages 13 to 17. It is a tween option Uber is reported to be testing, not something a parent can book.

What about Lyft?

Lyft launched teen accounts on February 9, 2026, for riders aged 13 to 17. CNBC reported that the program includes PIN verification, real-time tracking and recordings.

Lyft Teen runs only in select regions, and Lyft's help page names no California city. Lyft's Terms of Service say riders must be 18, except 13 to 17-year-olds on a parent's account in markets where Lyft allows it. Lyft's teen accounts have not been announced for San Diego.

What San Diego parents use instead

Free transit for older kids

MTS buses and trolleys are free for ages 6 through 18 with a Youth PRONTO card or app account, under the Youth Opportunity Pass. Children 5 and under always ride free. The pass is a pilot that runs through June 30, 2027. Youth riders must carry eligible ID and tap or scan before every ride. For a teen on a route they know, it is often the simplest answer.

Carpools and family

Trading rides with other parents still covers a lot of school and practice trips. Some schools use a carpool app such as GoKid, which connects parents who drive each other's kids. It has no paid drivers, and it is free for parents when the school pays for it. Family and neighbors fill in the rest.

A kids ride service

RideNest is a prearranged child transportation service for kids ages 8 to 18 in San Diego. Parents book rides ahead of time for school pickups, sports, after-school activities, appointments and recurring weekly routes. RideNest is preparing for a San Diego launch in 2026, and parents can join the waitlist now. Our comparison of San Diego kids ride options sets them side by side.

RideNest's safety plan has five layers, in the site's words: FBI and DOJ background-checked Nest Drivers, live GPS tracking, PIN-verified drop-offs, vehicles 5 years or newer, and $1M insurance on every ride. At drop-off, the driver checks the pickup person's photo ID, that adult enters a 4-digit PIN, and the parent gets a photo confirmation. You can read the full plan on the safety page.
